When the Microwave Stops Heating
Microwaves hold a lethal charge in the capacitor even when unplugged. This is one appliance nobody should open themselves.
- Runs and turns but does not heat the food
- Sparking or arcing inside the cavity
- Control panel dead or unresponsive to touch
- Turntable will not rotate
- Loud buzzing or humming during operation
- Door will not latch, or it stops when the door is nudged
- Vent fan or cooktop light not working on an over-range unit
- Combo unit where the microwave works but the oven does not
Inside a built-in unit. High-voltage components make microwaves genuinely unsafe to open at home.

Microwave Repair Questions
My microwave runs but does not heat anything. What failed?
That is the classic magnetron or high-voltage circuit failure: magnetron, diode, capacitor or transformer. The turntable and light run off a separate low-voltage circuit, which is why everything looks normal while nothing gets hot. It is very diagnosable, and on a built-in or combo unit usually well worth repairing.
Is it safe to open a microwave myself?
No. The capacitor stores a potentially lethal charge even after the unit is unplugged, and it can hold it for a long time. This is genuinely the one appliance where we would tell anyone not to attempt it. It has to be discharged properly before anything else happens.
Is a built-in microwave worth repairing?
Usually very much so. A countertop unit is often cheaper to replace than repair, but built-ins, drawer units and microwave/oven combos are expensive appliances that are frequently integrated into cabinetry, so a repair saves both the appliance cost and the installation work.
My microwave sparks inside when it runs.
Stop using it. Arcing is usually a burned waveguide cover, food debris in the cavity, or damaged cavity paint exposing bare metal. Left running it can damage the magnetron and turn a small repair into a large one.
The microwave works but the wall oven below it does not.
On combination units the two halves often share a control board and power supply, so a fault in one can present in the other. We diagnose the whole unit rather than assuming they are independent appliances.
The vent fan and light on my over-range microwave stopped working.
Usually the fan motor, the light socket, or the control board section that drives them. The microwave function can carry on working perfectly while those fail, since they run on separate circuits.
