Dryer Repair, Gas and Electric

No heat, three cycles to dry one load, will not start, or shutting off early. Dryer faults are also the leading cause of household appliance fires, so they are worth dealing with promptly.

A Dryer That Has Stopped Drying

Some of these are twenty-minute fixes. One or two are genuine fire hazards. All are worth a call.

Testing supply voltage at the outlet. A dryer with no heat is often a lost leg of 240V, not a broken dryer.

Questions

Dryer Repair Questions

On an electric dryer it is usually a burned-out heating element, a blown thermal fuse, or (surprisingly often) a lost leg of the 240V supply, meaning the dryer is fine and the breaker or outlet is not. On a gas dryer it is typically the igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils. We test the supply first, because it costs nothing to rule out and saves you a part you did not need.

Nine times out of ten the dryer is fine and the venting is restricted. Lint accumulates through the duct and out to the wall vent, airflow collapses, and moist air simply cannot escape. This is also the single biggest dryer fire risk in a house. We test actual airflow rather than assuming.

It is worth acting on. Squealing generally means the drum rollers, idler pulley or bearings are worn. Running it that way eventually shreds the belt and can seize the drum, turning a modest repair into a much larger one.

Yes, both gas and electric. Gas dryers add an igniter, flame sensor and gas valve to the picture, all of which we diagnose and replace routinely.

We assess and address venting as part of diagnosing airflow-related faults, since a restricted vent is so often the actual cause. If the run needs more extensive work we will tell you exactly what is needed.

Usually a faulty moisture sensor telling the control board the load is dry when it is not, or a cycling thermostat shutting the heat down early because of restricted airflow. Both are straightforward to test.
